About Jay Eckardt

I grew up across a wide range of places and landscapes, from Puerto Rico and St. Thomas to Colorado, North Carolina, and Florida. New York City was the natural next step, and it has been my home throughout my adult life.
In the mid-1990s, while living in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, I was immersed in a creative world of music, film, and collaboration. I spent time around bands like Fellini’s Basement and worked with my longtime friend Naoki Iwakawa, shooting 16mm film and projecting images at live shows.
After 30 years working in the camera department as a member of Local 600, image-making has become deeply instinctive for me. The Holga holds a special appeal: simple, unpredictable, and full of possibility. My process is rooted in in-camera multiple exposures, using chance, repetition, and observation to transform ordinary New York moments into layered photographic compositions.
Special thanks to Imaging Coliseum for front-end lab work, and to Gerard at My Own Color Lab for his guidance.
